American Ingenuity manufacturers eight different dome size building kits.  Domes are measured by diameter in feet.  The 22′ dome can have a first floor only while the 27′, 30′, 34′, 36′, 40′, 45′ and 48′ domes can have a second floor framed with wood 2×10 joists.  If a cupola is installed on top of a 40′, 45′ or 48′ dome there is enough interior height to install a small loft area under the cupola.  The floor plan selected determines how much of the second floor is installed resulting in high vaulted ceilings over a first floor living room and dining room.  It is typical one half to two thirds of the second floor is installed. Below are the square footage specs for each size dome.  And below are pictures of some of the dome sizes.

Please scroll down the page.  After the pictures there are charts showing specifications for each size dome.

DOME GEOMETRY: Frequency is the number of intersections from the center of one pentagon grouping to the next pentagon grouping.

  • Ai’s 22’ and 27′ domes are 2-frequency, 1/2 spheres on a 4′ vertical riser.
  • Ai’s 30’, 34’, 36′, 40’, 45’, and 48′ domes are 3-frequency, 3/8 spheres on a 4′ vertical riser.

American Ingenuity’s 30′ through 48′ in diameter domes are approximately a one half sphere with a four foot tall riser wall.

5/8 Domes:

  • Ai. finds it more practical to use a vertical 4′ riser wall on all of its domes instead of designing its domes with the 5/8 geometry.
  • Ai’s 30′ dome turns out to be almost the same height as a 5/8 dome.
  • Also the 4′ riser wall makes for a better shaped entryway and allows the dome to link with all of our other size domes.
