For those of you wanting to compare the Aidome Building Kit vs Deltec Home Kit, please take time to read and analyze info listed below.  Please compare kit costs and contents of each kit.  Instead of building a home from a Deltec wood kit,  consider building an Ai prefabricated concrete home dome kit.  To warm up the exterior & interior of the American Ingenuity (Ai) concrete dome; 1) paint the dome exterior light green or light tan.  2) install rock or wood on the framed walls under dormers & entryways and on the riser panels. 3) Install wood decks off the first floor entryways.  4) Install trellis with vines to conceal the fire resistant concrete. On the interior adhere oak to the dome shell drywall and install wood flooring, wood cabinetry.

We understand that it is important to compare various companies when it comes to designing and building your home, and that you may want to compare our concrete kit to Deltec homes.

Ai would like to do a comparison between both of our companies, so you can determine which home would be best for you. We want to offer you a comparison showing that Aidome building kits will offer you more for your money, be more energy efficient, offer better defense from the elements and have lower maintenance costs over time.

Please be aware that both AiDomes and Deltec do not install a foundation. That work is completed by a local foundation subcontractor near you. In Ai’s building plans are foundation pdfs detailing foundation dimensions.

Please note in the information below we are simply pointing out the differences in our products.  Deltec makes a fine product, but we at Ai feel we have superior home product.

The Deltec kit: As you can see their system is wood frame, it requires that the house exterior be finished with some sort of siding, and the roof shingled. Per their website, there is no mention of the inclusion of insulation, or drywall for the shell and attic area (there is mentioned as one of the top upgrades (i.e. additional cost) some sort of energy barrier for north & south facing areas of the home, not throughout the home).  Being wood, the wood exterior is subject to fire, rot and termites. 

With an Ai dome Kit:  When assembled, the prefabricated panels produce all the structural components, the concrete roof, all the insulation and all the interior drywall for the dome shell’s exterior walls and roof.  In addition, the dome shell carries a 225 mph wind and F4 tornado guarantee.  Ai’s panelized system does not contain wood or steel framing (ribs) to interrupt our standard R28 insulation. There is no exterior wood to burn or rot or for termites to eat.  As an added bonus, there is no roof to blow off in high winds, and has a noncombustible fire resistant concrete exterior.  (Pressure Treated wood is used to frame the walls under the entryways and dormers to accept your locally purchased doors and windows.  During Kit Assembly a temporary wooden rib system is installed to support the panels. However once the seam areas between the panels and the entryways and dormers are concreted, the Aidome is self-supporting and the rib system is removed.)

  • Although all homes require exterior maintenance, an Ai dome (when erected), simply requires painting – there are no shingles to replace. Whereas a traditional home, as well as the Deltec kit would require repair and/or  replacement of the roof, as well as maintenance/repair and/or replacement of the siding.
  • In regards to the cost to build, both Deltec and Ai are kits, they are not complete houses, they are the shell of the structure,  this is done by local contractors (Ai knows of an  Independent Kit Consultant to assist your contractors with shell assembly).

The following article covers American Ingenuity’s two page Dome Kit Order Form & Parts List Description. 

Each floor plan varies as to the number and type of entryways, window dormers and door dormers. Once Ai knows which floor plan you prefer, we can complete a preliminary Building Kit Order Form that lists the kit with entryway and dormer pricing. Once your plans are finished, the preliminary Order Form is updated to show pricing for the Parts List Items.

 Generally additional entryways or dormers can add $300 to $4,000 on to the kit with one entryway sale pricing.

  • The 2×4’s cut/drilled/painted for the temporary wooden rib system to support the panels during kit assembly can be purchased from Ai or we email the specifications for them to be cut on your site.  The 2×4’s can number 75 (for 2 freq domes 15’ – 27’) or 135 (3 freq domes 30’-48’) or 210 (4 freq. 60’). 2×4’s can add approx. $605 or $1,088 or $1,999 to your Order Form.
    • (Due to fluctuating 2×4 prices we do not know exact price right now. Pricing will be based on current 2×4 costs at the time of shipment.)  Ai does not add overhead costs to the labor to cut the 2×4’s. Only the labor costs to cut the 2×4’s plus 2×4’ cost itself determines the pricing.
  • Parts List Items can add $300 to $1,500 to the Order Form: The second floor of the dome can be partially suspended from the dome shell. Depending on your floor plan & size of dome there can be 8 to 20 rods.  This means suspension rods are installed in the shell during the kit assembly.  A rod and top and bottom plate is around $50. The rods and other items are listed on the Parts List.

 The following description is to give you a heads up as to what is included within the two pages of the American Ingenuity  Dome Kit Order Form.  

The first page of the Order Form lists:

  • The dome kit size and its regular pricing and discount (any discount is on the kit with one entryway pricing and is not on the building options)
  • All the individual building options (entryways, window dormers, door dormers, cupola, link, etc), each are listed separately with quantities and pricing
  • Pricing for the items from the Parts List.  See below for a description of the Parts List.
  • Shipping Estimate or states Shipping To Be Determined Later.  Minimum shipping cost is $800.
  • Sales tax and applicable Florida surtax if kit is shipped to Florida property address
  • Date sale pricing is good through
  • Date Signed Order Forms and Deposit are due by to receive sale pricing
  • A Shipping Date range for kit shipment
  • Estimated Shipping Costs
  • $120 purchase for the four lifting spikes (items are not returned to Ai).  If purchasing more than one dome, you need one set of spikes for each dome as they wear out with use.
  • Hub Deposit & purchase bolts, nuts, washers:
    • If you are in the USA a deposit is placed on the steel hubs for 5 months rental time with $20 monthly rental cost over five months.  The deposit is returned when all hubs are returned within the five month rental period. 
      • 3 freq domes: 30’- 48’ dome kit –  the hub deposit is $1,610  for 46 steel hubs.
      • 2 freq domes: 22’ & 27’ dome kit – the hub deposit is $910 for 26 steel hubs.
      • 4 freq dome: 60′ dome kit – the hub deposit is $2,485 for  71 steel hubs.
      • The steel hubs are bolted to your locally purchased 2×4’s that you cut, drill holes and paint the ends…the hubs and 2×4’s make up the geodesic wooden support skeleton to hold the panels in place while the seams between the panels are concreted and the entryways and dormers are concreted.   You borrow the hubs from us and UPS or mail them back to us when you are finished with them.  Ai issues you a refund check, less any missing hubs, etc.  Once the mesh in the seams is overlapped, locked with C rings and concreted and the entryways and dormers are concreted the dome is self-supporting and the rib system is removed. There is no wood in or on the shell to interrupt the insulation.
    • Purchase price for bolts, nuts & washers that are used to connect the steel hubs to 2×4 wooden ribs. 2 & 3 freq. $128.  4 freq. $160. These items are not returned to Ai.  The items get worn with use and cannot be used again.
  • International Orders – hubs are purchased because they weight around 150 lbs and cannot be returned.
    • For 2 freq domes 26 hubs are purchased with bolts, nuts, washers for approx. $1,170 and not returned to Ai.
    • For 3 freq domes 46 Hubs are Purchased with bolts, nuts, washers for approx. $2,070 because they are not returned.
    • Ai has to rent a telescoping forklift to load the container. Our forklift cannot be used.  The rental cost is $800 for one day rental.  If your order includes two or more containers, the telescoping forklift may need to be rented for two days or more. You will need a telescoping forklift to unload the container.
    • Add $200 for Ai to complete international paperwork and coordinate your shipping with your freight forwarder.
  • Purchase cut, drilled, painted 2×4’s for temporary wooden rib system from Ai or Ai can email specs for the 2×4’s to be cut, drilled, painted on site.  To determine pricing, Ai only charges the cost of the 2×4 and actual labor costs to cut, drill and paint the 2×4’s.  Ai does not add our business overhead costs to the 2×4 pricing. 
    • For two freq: 15’, 18’, 22’ or 27’ dome there are 75 – 2×4’s – approx. price $605
    • For three freq: 30’ – 48’ domes there are 135 – 2×4’s approx. price $1,088

The temporary support system needs 2×4’s cut to a precise length, holes drilled in both ends of the 2×4’s that make the triangles and one hole drilled in the 2×4 leg for the riser panels and ends painted red, white or blue to match the hub leg colors.  Ai realizes this cutting, drilling and painting is difficult and time consuming for our buyers; therefore, the cut, drilled and painted 2×4’s can be purchased from Ai and shipped on the truck with the dome kit.

Please let us know if there are any items you do not want to purchase, and we will remove them from the Parts List or change any quantities.

The second page of the Order Form is the Parts List which consists of two parts.

 The first part of the Parts List is a listing of items that come with the kit;

  • 4-8 cans of expanding foam, one metal expanding foam dispensing gun and one can of cleaner
  • 2 galvanized steel cables that go around the dome
  • admixture A – for concrete
  • admixture B – for concrete
  • synthetic fibers – for first layer of concrete
  • bonding agent – applied between two layers of concrete
  • C-rings and two pairs of C-ring pliers
  • Cupola kit if you have a cupola

 The second part of the Parts Lists is a listing of items not included in the kit which you can choose to purchase from Ai:

  • Items to suspend the second floor perimeter joists and to suspend other areas of the second floor where there are no first floor load bearding walls
    • 6 ft Suspension rod with nut coated to prevent rust & two nuts & washer -$19 set
    • Top plates, bottom plates or flat plates for horizontal seams….Ai purchases the steel, cuts the steel and drills it and bends it to specs. Each plate $14.90.
    • Garage door header modified Z plate – $14.90
  • Concrete Accelerator (if you are going to be mixing concrete in late fall when temperatures could be freezing at night)
  • ¼” cable for lip edge of first floor door dormer – $2.50/ft.
  • Simpson hangers (connect the second floor edge beams to the joists) – $1.95 to $4.20 each
  • 1/2″ in diameter 6″ long stainless steel forged eyebolts for the top of the dome – $17 each.  During kit assembly a 4″ Vent Pipe is installed where the five top P panels meet.  An eyebolt is installed in each of the five top seams five inches from the vent pipe.  To paint the dome a rope is tied thru an eyebolt and secured to the worker’s harness.  The eyebolt keeps the rope away from the Vent Pipe so the pipe is not damaged.  The rope attached to the eyebolt needs to be part of an engineered system with a maximum arresting force of 900 lbs.  If a cupola is purchased six other eyebolts are purchased for a total of 11 eyebolts.
  • 1”x1” galvanized steel mesh for link – $1.05/sq.ft. – can be ordered in 300 sq.ft.; 500 sq.ft. or 600 sq.ft. amounts…we are shipping complete rolls. This way we do not need to unroll the rolls and measure lengths out and then reroll the rolls and strap them, etc. If you want less than 300 sq.ft. then the price per sq.ft.is $2.10.
  • Ai originally designed 22’ and 27’ domes as two frequency domes for garages because the entryway would remove three riser panels instead of two risers for the 30’ thru 48’ dome entryways. This causes the 22’ and 27’ dome entryway panels to be longer.  Because they are longer they consist of 3 ½” EPS not wrapped in steel mesh and there is no concrete applied on the underside or lip edge.  However if the dome kit buyer purchases 1”x1” galvanized steel mesh for 15’ or 18’ or 22’ or 27’ G  type entryway panels at  $1.05/sq.ft. – minimum 300 sq.ft. or $315. Ai will wrap the 15’ or 18’ or 22’ or 27’ entryway panels at no labor cost for our buyer.
  • 1/2″x 1/2″ galvanized steel mesh for the entryway and dormer framing – $1.05 per sq.ft.
  • Additional “C” Rings (small and large) are purchased because they tend to get dropped. Small (2 – 3 lbs) – $5.85 per pound.  Large (2-3 lbs) – $4.75 per pound.
  • Two additional “C” Ring pliers are purchased – $18 each.
  • Additional Bonding Agent is purchased. The Bonding Agent that American Ingenuity ships with your kit is new and improved and is better than what you can purchase locally.  Locally Home Depot, etc. sells a cheaper bonding agent which is a blend of vinyl & acrylic resins. The bonding agent we include with your kit is manufactured by Richard’s Paint and is number RP295.  It is a 100% pure acrylic resin. Ai sells a five gallon bucket for $107 because Ai wants you to have the very best bonding agent.  Ai recommends that you purchase an extra five gallon bucket for each dome kit instead of purchasing a less quality bonding agent locally when you run out.
  • Additional metal expanding foam dispensing gun $40 – gun wears out from use.
  • Additional synthetic fibers for the second layer of concrete – $7.00 a bag – good for four bags of Portland cement.
  • Additional cans of cleaner for the metal foam dispensing gun – $10.85 ea – small dome 1 can.  Large dome 2 – 3 cans.
  • Additional admixture A and admixture B as liquids get spilled or evaporate in the hot sun.  Depends on size dome.  Small dome 1 gal A and 2 gals B.  Large dome 2 gals A and 4 gallons B.   A is $30.40 a gallon. B is $34.40 a gallon.
  • Additional 24 oz cans of expanding foam – $11.10 ea. Small kits need 12 extra cans; larger kits 40’, 45’ 48’ – 24 cans.
    • Ai ships 4 – 8 cans of expanding foam with your kit at no cost to you. You can purchase more cans from us.  Our cans are 24 ozs. We send a metal dispensing gun and a can of cleaner at no cost. Expanding foam is applied under each riser panel.  Grooves are cut in the dome shell wall board & EPS to insert the electrical wiring.  After the electrical wiring is installed, the grooves are filled with expanding foam, the expanding foam is cut flush and then the wall is finished with tape and joint compound just as drywall is finished or with mixture of cement/perlite – recipe in Assembly Manual.   Of course, you can decrease or increase this number.  The dispensing gun allows your workers to start and stop the foam without having to use the whole can at one time…like you do with the small cans that you purchase from the hardware store that have the plastic nozzle which cannot be restarted the following day.

 Items on the Parts List can be shipped with your dome kit at no extra shipping cost.  American Ingenuity only orders Parts Items based on each customer’s order.  Ai does not stock any of these items; therefore if you need additional items after the kit is shipped we can give you the phone number of the company where you can order parts (bonding agent, Enerfoam, etc) directly from them, pay their shipping cost, handling fee and have the items drop shipped to you.

The Parts List items and the 2×4 pricing for the temporary rib system can change because their costs can fluctuate.  Two months prior to the delivery of your kit, Ai will call the shipping broker and obtain your shipping cost and will review the 2×4’ pricing and Parts List items.  If costs have changed, Ai will complete a revised Order Form showing latest pricing and shipping cost.  The balance due on your Order Form is due three weeks prior to the shipping of your dome kit in the form of a cashier’s check or bank check.

The Collars chose the American Ingenuity super insulated concrete domes because they are five miles from closest fire station and need to produce their own power for heating. Their area is surrounded by forests that could burn at any time so a noncombustible concrete exterior was a must for their new home.   At the bottom of this page is a pdf containing a four page article that ran in Home Power Magazine describing their domes.

45′ home dome is 2,025 square feet: (1,487 sq.ft. on first floor with 538 sq.ft. on the second floor).  Link of 175 sq.ft. contains utility room and 1/2 bath.  30′ garage dome has 642 sq.ft on first floor with battery & inverter room of 145 sq.ft. –  269 sq.ft of attic storage.

45′ first floor contains 252 sq.ft. master bedroom with 71 sq.ft. closet, 115 sq.ft. bath.  Kitchen is 206 sq.ft. with 70 sq.ft. pantry. Living room 365 sq.ft.  Dining room 200 sq.ft.  45′ second floor contains 150 sq.ft. office, 72 sq.ft. bathroom and 166 sq.ft. guest room. Here are pdfs to view their floor plan layouts.

The following heating recap was written by Mr. Collar in July of 2012.

Inside, the masonry heater (also called a “Russian furnace”) consists of a large masonry firebox topped with a flue internally configured as a maze. Flue gasses exit the top of the lower firebox and travel up and down and back and forth through the flue maze imparting heat into the masonry before going up the stack. The large mass of the firebox/flue stores the heat and radiates it out into the room over a long period. During winter I usually have one fire per day. I fill the firebox very full and light it off between 6:00 and 8:00 in the evening. The fire is not dampered but burns hot and fast so there’s little creosote buildup. The fire dies out between 10:00 and midnight and I close off the air supply and flue dampers for maximum heat retention. In the morning the fireplace masonry is hot to the touch and it simply radiates its stored heat all day keeping the dome comfortably warm. The fireplace is centrally located to maximize heating, extending into the master bedroom. I added two small forced air fans at the top of the firebox to pull even more air over the face and thus increase heat discharge — although I rarely use them.

There are 11 solar water tubes each about a foot in diameter and 8 feet tall placed in a large south-facing window. Originally designed for aquaculture, they are water-filled with waterbed conditioner added for algae control. In the winter the sun warms the water during the daytime. Even with nighttime temperatures below zero, the tubes can reach 85 deg F on a sunny day — especially if there’s snow on the ground to increase the solar radiation effect. At night the tubes re-radiate heat back into the house and I lower the thermal curtain between the tubes and the large window to prevent heat loss back outside. (The thermal curtain is visible in photo 2). I worked with American Ingenuity’s designers to ensure the entryway overhang was sized to shade the tubes during the summer and to provide adequate foundation to handle the extra weight of the water.

The house generally stays comfortable for up to three days without supplemental heat. However, I also have two small propane direct vent wall heaters which are used only when I expect to be gone for more than two days. I’m working on automating the thermal curtain to be able to raise and lower it for daytime solar gain when I’m not at home.

The following was exerted from a July 1998 Home Power magazine: “To power the home they utilized “Photovoltaic array of 32 BP-75 panels supplying an APT3 power center which charges their 2110 Amp-hour Pacific Chloride batteries. This is enough to last them three to five days, depending on usage. Given their ridge top location, they included lightning protection in the APT. A Trace SW4024 sine wave inverter provides clean electrical power with no noticeable line noise. A backup generator is available if needed.” “There average summertime power consumption is between 150 and 200 kWh/month for 2,700 sq.ft. of living space. Wintertime consumption is somewhat higher. For comparison, there average pre-solar usage was near 600 kWh/month in their 2,000 sq.ft. suburban home!”

The following info covers Ai Domes & Tornadoes.    In August 1992 American Ingenuity domes were put to the ultimate test of strength when they faced the wrath of Hurricane Andrew as it slammed into south Florida. Winds at the nearby Tamiami airport were clocked at 212 mph, spawning over 100 tornadoes within the storm and leaving practically everything in its wake leveled. Nearly 200,000 people become homeless overnight. Even a tower at the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant, designed to withstand 200-mph winds, was irrevocably damaged by this fierce storm. We were not surprised, however, when we learned that our domes survived – in great contrast to the thousands of conventionally built houses of their neighbors.

45′ Dome went thru Hurricane Andrew & Tornado with no structural damage.

Above is picture of a 45′ American Ingenuity dome home built in 1989 that was in the direct path of the devastating storm, bearing the worst Andrew & a tornado could deliver; yet it suffered no structural damage. A two wide metal horse trailer was impelled against the dome leaving a paint skid marking on the dome where the trailer slide around the dome to the other side. The horse trailer caused a crack in the riser wall and a chunk of concrete to break loose. The dome owner, caulked the crack and mixed up fiber concrete and filled the chunk and then painted the area.

Due to the type and direction of the debris scattered around the dome’s neighborhood, an engineer from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (F.E.M.A.) surmised that a tornado had struck the area. The engineer’s own Alabama home had been hit by a tornado a few years ago, so he was impressed by the integrity of the dome on an emotional as well as a professional level. The dome structure had withstood not only the force of a hurricane but a tornado as well. The incredibly intense winds ripped open double entry doors and 12′ sliding glass doors, which had been covered with protective plywood sheathing. Even though the wood and glass doors of the entryways succumbed to the wind and allowed interior water damage from the rain, the dome itself stood strong.

The Ai dome’s F4 tornado warranty covers the dome’s exterior shell and does not include windows and doors.  High speed tornado winds pick up debris which can be hurled through windows and doors.  As a result if you live in an area prone for tornadoes, consider building within the dome a safe room with concrete walls to protect your family from flying debris coming through windows and doors. The tornado picture is from Wikipedia and is of tornado near Anadarko, Oklahoma. The funnel is the thin tube reaching from the cloud to the ground. The lower part of this tornado is surrounded by a translucent dust cloud, kicked up by the tornado’s strong winds at the surface. The wind of the tornado has a much wider radius than the funnel itself.

The borders of Tornado Alley are not clearly defined. They vary, depending on the criteria used — frequency, intensity, or events per unit area. Generally, a tornado alley map starts in central Texas and goes north through Oklahoma, central Kansas and Nebraska and eastern South Dakota, sometimes dog-legging east through Iowa, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana to western Ohio.

While the “Wizard of Oz” still conjures up images of Kansas as a tornado-prone area, that state is not the most highly impacted state when it comes to tornadoes. According to the National Climatic Data Center, Texas reports the highest number of tornadoes of any state, although its very large land mass accounts for that status. Kansas and Oklahoma are second and third respectively when it comes to the number of tornadoes reported, but those states report more tornadoes per land area than Texas.

Convergence of conditions:
Tornado Alley has all of the weather conditions needed for a tornado to take shape. Tornadoes form when three different types of air converge in a specific manner: a layer of warm and humid air near the ground along with strong southerly winds; colder air along with strong west or southwest winds line the upper atmosphere; and a third layer of very warm dry air that hovers between the warm and moist air at low levels and the cool dry air above.

While not as familiar as Tornado Alley, the designation Dixie Alley generally refers to another part of the country that is likely to experience tornadoes — generally the upper Tennessee Valley and Lower Mississippi Valley.

Florida’s almost daily thunderstorms spawn a large number of tornadoes, designating it as the state with the with the highest number of tornadoes per square mile. However, a relatively small percentage of Florida’s tornadoes are considered high intensity.

Globally, latitudes between about 30 degrees and 50 degrees North or South provide the most favorable environment for tornadoes. The United States records about 1,000 tornadoes a year, by far the most prolific of any region in the world, with Canada ranking second at only 100 per year.

 

The following info is about Oklahoma Concrete Domes in tornado alley. Due to their home site being located in  tornado alley, the Marshalls’ chose to build  American Ingenuity domes because their steel reinforced concrete exterior resists F4 tornado winds.  Bruce Marshall was owner builder of their two domes and did a fantastic job based on the finished photos below.

The 48′ home dome on the left is linked to 40′ garage dome on the right.  The 48′ dome has 2,649 sq.ft. (1,646 sq.ft. on first floor with 1,003 sq.ft on the second floor.) Link is 150 sq.ft.  The 40′ dome has 1,823 sq.ft. (1,151 sq.ft. on the first floor and 672 sq.ft. on the second floor). 5th Step – Purchase Dome Building Plans. Besides manufacturing geodesic dome building kits, American Ingenuity (Ai) designs residential and commercial building plans that show the room arrangements of the home and other detailed dimensions and data that are used to obtain a building permit, to build the foundation, to assemble the dome kit, install windows and doors, build interior walls and second floor joists, etc. See below for contents of the blueprints.

With your financing determined, you know what your budget is and can determine the size dome that fits your needs. Ai’s stock plans contain a blueprint for the installation of a monolithic concrete slab.  Your terrain may require a stem wall, basement or elevated foundation.  Or your building department may require your new home to be built on pilings and an elevated platform. Based on your soil report and terrain and foundation construction costs for your area, you will tell Ai what type foundation you want designed below your dome.  For all foundations other than slab, Ai hires a local Florida licensed PE engineer to assist us in your custom foundation design.

Once we see which plan you prefer & what type foundation is to be designed, Ai can complete a Plans Quote that lists the regular pricing & sale pricing of the dome plans, custom foundation if needed, engineering services if needed, engineer seal fee for your state if required by your building department, and energy report cost if required by your building department. Once you agree to the Plans Quote and pay in full for the plans, any engineer services & fees, energy report, Ai schedules your plans for design. AMERICAN INGENUITY’S PHILOSOPHY:   One of the reasons American Ingenuity has been in business since 1976 and is very reputable, is that we try hard to treat all our customers the same and produce a quality dome home kit. Our business philosophy and product is unique to the housing industry. Ai believes that each person should pay for only what they need. This means only the Buyers whose building departments required engineer sealed plans and energy report, pay for those items.  Ai does not burden the price of the building kit for building plans, engineer seal or energy reports as a result, Ai’s dome kit’s pricing is usually one third to one-half less than other housing kits.  One truck is required for delivery for one 27ft thru 48 ft dome kit.  No interior items other than the interior shell drywall is included with the kit. Ai believes you should not pay another truck’s shipping costs for windows, exterior doors, bathroom fixtures, kitchen cabinets, etc. when those items can be competitively shopped and purchased locally.

 What is included in American Ingenuity’s Residential & Commercial Dome Building Plans? American Ingenuity’s Building Plans are new and improved. The building plans consist of two sets of blueprints that include the drawings for the dome that are needed when acquiring a building permit for one dome built on a concrete slab. Or Ai will design custom foundations; i.e. basement, columns with concrete platform, pilings, stem wall, etc.

Plus Ai emails your completed building plans pdfs to you so that you can have additional sets of building plans plotted locally. The plans are composed using the AUTOCAD program on our computer aided drafting system.

How does the American Ingenuity dome withstand tree impact & snow load versus truss roof house?  Very well based on two actual dome owner’s experiences.

For those of you who are researching what type house to build in a forested area, please consider the advantages of an American Ingenuity concrete dome versus a log home with a truss roof or a conventional house with a truss roof.

One of American Ingenuity’s perspective kit buyers emailed this question: “When I was living in the deep woods and any kind of wind storm or even a bad ice storm came up it was a major concern/fear of a large tree branch hitting the house.  How does the Ai steel reinforced concrete dome roof compare to truss roof for tree impact & heavy snow load?”    Based on two actual Ai dome home examples, the Ai concrete roof is so strong it can resist 30″ in diameter tree impact and the weight of several feet of snow. 

Homes built in a forested environment run the risk of having a tree fall on the roof or if in a cold climate a possible ice storm can cause ice loaded tree branches to fall on the roof. The steel reinforced concrete roof in an American Ingenuity dome is resistant to tree impact damage. However a wood truss roof is likely to be damaged from a tree branch or tree falling on the roof.

The strength of the Ai dome is evident in this example of a tree falling on the American Ingenuity dome. There was no damage to the Brack’s 48′ American Ingenuity dome after winds in excess of 75 mph hit North Carolina in July of 1996. The real test came when a 115′ high, 30″ in diameter hickory tree was blown over and fell on their dome. The impact broke a 10″ diameter branch off the tree. The tree slid off the dome and landed on a deck post driving it and it’s 16″ square concrete footer 6″ further into the ground. The insurance agent who inspected the damage to the deck conveyed his amazement about the dome’s strength with this comment, “If that had been a frame house the tree would have ended up in the basement!”

The American Ingenuity dome could handle the tree’s impact due to the triangle panel shape being the strongest shape among all shapes and because the steel mesh from panel to panel is overlapped, locked & covered with fiber concrete. As a result the continuous panel mesh transfers the stress throughout the dome. In a conventional house the stress is confined to one area resulting in the tree probably damaging the roof or coming through the roof.

More about heavy snow loads: Mr. and Mrs. Carroll visited Robens and Tom Napolitan’s dome. Robens was enthusiastic, but Tom was not. Tom explained to the Carroll’s, “Its all HER idea, I didn’t want a dome.” Mary Carroll phoned the Napolitans during a cold spell where they experienced heavy snow fall. Mrs. Carroll said you couldn’t keep Tom quiet this time. He had nothing but wonderful things to say about the dome and had completely turned around about the wonders of living in an American Ingenuity dome…..“ROOFS HAD COLLAPSED in their area under several feet of snow, but NOT HIS DOME!” Tom’s turnaround sold Mary and her husband on an Ai dome.

How does the Ai prefab home dome stand up to high winds, ice storms, several feet of snow & forest fire?  American Ingenuity performed a load test on our largest 48′ triangle.  The triangle shaped component panel withstood 170 lbs. per sq. ft.  load.  A 120-mph wind will exert a pressure of 30 lbs. per sq. ft. on a vertical wall and a snow load exceeding 90 lbs. per sq. ft. is rare. Typically snow loads are 20 to 50 lbs. to 90 lbs. per sq.ft.  Engineers have assisted Ai’s design team to design the dome to withstand 90 lbs per sq.ft. snow load.  Recently dome building plans were designed for Colorado at 90 lb snow load and 110 mph wind speed  which were engineer sealed for Colorado.

The strength of the concrete Ai dome makes it resistant against tree impact, heavy snows and fires making it ideal to build for a vacation home or a retirement home where the home is not occupied year round. If the dome home is built in a cold climate, there will be times when the family may want to live in a warmer climate during the winter. When deciding which building kit to purchase, please compare apples to apples which means please compare the contents of the log home kit or the traditional home kit vs the contents of the Ai dome kit and compare kit costs. The process of overlapping/locking the steel mesh of American Ingenuity’s prefabricated panels to adjacent panels and filling the seams with special fiber concrete produces 1) the structural components of the home; 2) the finished concrete exterior surface; 3)all the shell R28 insulation is installed; and 4) all the dome shell 1/2″ drywall is installed. The American Ingenuity dome is very energy efficient because it has 30% less surface area than a conventional house and has R28 EPS insulation that is not interrupted by wood…expect heating and cooling bills to be 50% to 60% than your neighbors.  Ai’s standard 7″ Expanded polystyrene insulation is comparable to 10″ of fiber glass batting.  If desired the Aidome insulation can be upgraded to 9″ thick expanded polystyrene (EPS) resulting in R36. In conventional houses the vertical walls have one R value and the roof has another R value requirement.  In the Aidome because all the panels which make up the walls and roof have the same R value, this means the Aidome will pass an Energy Report.  If your floor plan has four or five entryways with the glass maxed out, to pass an Energy Report the glass may need to be triple panned instead of the typical double pane glass.

A picture of the dome at 7,500 feet elevation in Utah showing snow is one of the flashing pictures on our home page. The dome is off the grid and has increased EPS insulation from our standard 7″ R28 to 9″ or R36. Quote from the Utah dome owners: “Our house and solar electric system have met and exceeded all of our expectations. Our home is warm and spacious. Even with nighttime temperatures below zero, a fire in the masonry heater in the evening and a full day of sun warms the house to 70 degrees F. Our average summertime power consumption is between 150 and 200 kWh/month for 2700 square feet of living space. Wintertime consumption is somewhat higher. The Aidomes are even more energy efficient when heating is required instead of cooling. When cooling, kilowatts have to be used to overcome heat from clothes dryer, dishwasher, sun light, etc. When heating those heat sources are used.  Ai’s 3,700 sq.ft. office domes can be cooled for less than $55 a  month in the hot Florida summer months.  A Florida 1,200 sq.ft. 34′ dome can be cooled for less than $22 a month in the hot Florida summer months.

 

 

Ai received the following question about the fire resistance details for an American Ingenuity concrete dome versus a Monolithic concrete dome.  The question from Greg Legg is in regards to the YouTube Video posted below about a fire and concrete domes.  “I’m looking at the differences between your domes and the monolithic dome in the video about a fast moving fire and wondering how important it is to water down the exterior if a fire is approaching. In the video the owner mentions that he was surprised the pvc exterior wasn’t damaged during the fire. Not sure what he meant by pvc exterior but made me wonder.

The American Ingenuity (Ai) dome is designed to be as safe and fireproof as possible, the dome exterior is entirely noncombustible concrete. The Ai dome exterior is fire resistant concrete reinforced with galvanized steel mesh that does not require watering down as the homeowner did for the PVC covering on the Monolithic Dome. 

On site during the Ai dome panel assembly, the exterior seam areas between the prefab concreted panels consist of overlapped locked steel mesh filled with fiber concrete. The Ai dome shell is built by installing Ai’s prefabricated concreted panels onto a temporary wooden rib system.  After all the seam areas, entryways and dormers are concreted, the dome is self supporting and the temporary wooden system is removed.  The exterior concrete is primed and painted. There is no wood in or on the Ai dome shell to burn or to interrupt the insulation. There are no shingles to burn.The exterior concrete on the American Ingenuity Dome has no exposed PVC membrane or exterior material that needs to be watered down.

Monolithic Dome Assembly per their website:  In the monolithic dome assembly an Air Form is inflated, polyurethane foam is applied to the interior surface of the Airform, steel reinforcing rebar is attached to the foam using a specially engineered layout of hoop (horizontal) and vertical steel rebar and then Shotcrete – a special spray mix of concrete – is applied to the interior surface of the dome. The steel rebar is embedded in the concrete and then about three inches of shotcrete is applied.  This method results in an exposed exterior PVC membrane or exterior material which was watered down in the dome video.

All the panels in the American Ingenuity dome kit come to your job site premarked with numbers and letters to match the Nomenclature blueprint in the Building Plans.  An Assembly Manual is shipped with each Ai dome kit.  The kit is assembled by the owner builder or the owner hires a builder.  If desired a Kit Assembly Consultant can be hired to supervise the workers during kit assembly.  The process of stacking the panels, overlapping/locking the steel mesh of adjacent panels and filling the seams with special fiber concrete, produces the structural components of the home, the finished concrete surface, installs the R28 insulation and all the dome shell 1/2″ drywall.

What are the American Ingenuity triangular and rectangular shaped prefab panels made from? Center core of 7″ Expanded Polystyrene R-28 Insulation (not Styrofoam!), exterior is ¾” thick concrete reinforced with galvanized steel mesh with interior of 1/2″ Georgia-Pacific DensArmor Plus High-Performance gypsum drywall board (which is moisture resistant, mold resistant gypsum and noncombustible).

After the mesh is overlapped and locked between panels, special fiber concrete mixed on site is hand trowelled in the seam areas in two applications — bonding agent is applied between the two layers. The seam areas are about 3″ deep by 5″ wide with average of 2″ thick concrete.

Minor Damage Due to Horse Trailer Impact

In August 1992 American Ingenuity domes were put to the ultimate test of strength when they faced the wrath of Hurricane Andrew as it slammed into south Florida. Winds at the nearby Tamiami airport were clocked at 212 mph, spawning over 100 tornadoes within the storm and leaving practically everything in its wake leveled. Nearly 200,000 people become homeless overnight. Even a tower at the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant, designed to withstand 200-mph winds, was irrevocably damaged by this fierce storm. We were not surprised, however, when we learned that our domes survived – in great contrast to the thousands of conventionally built houses of their neighbors. On Key Largo, just 20 miles south of the eye of the storm, an Ai 40′ dome faced the brunt of the storm. Built on pilings near the Atlantic Ocean, it was exposed to relentless high winds and driving rain. Unlike houses and commercial buildings in the surrounding area, it sustained absolutely no damage.

Above is picture of a 45′ American Ingenuity dome home that was in the direct path of the devastating storm, bearing the worst Andrew could deliver; yet it suffered no structural damage. A two wide metal horse trailer was impelled against the dome leaving a paint skid marking on the dome where the trailer slide around the dome to the other side. The horse trailer caused a crack in the riser wall and a chunk of concrete to break loose. The dome owner, caulked the crack and mixed up fiber concrete and filled the chunk and then painted the area.

Due to the type and direction of the debris scattered around the dome’s neighborhood, an engineer from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (F.E.M.A.) surmised that a tornado had struck the area. The engineer’s own Alabama home had been hit by a tornado a few years ago, so he was impressed by the integrity of the dome on an emotional as well as a professional level. The dome structure had withstood not only the force of a hurricane but a tornado as well. The incredibly intense winds ripped open double entry doors and 12′ sliding glass doors, which had been covered with protective plywood sheathing. Even though the wood and glass doors of the entryways succumbed to the wind and allowed interior water damage from the rain, the dome itself stood strong.

Ai domes protect your wallet by saving you 50% to 60% off your heating and cooling costs. The major reasons for low utility bills are reduced surface area of the dome and its thick insulation uninterrupted by wood. The insulation is not interrupted by wood and there is no wood in the home’s exterior walls to rot or burn or be eaten by termites. During the panel assembly a temporary wooden rib system is used.  Once all the seams between the panels & the entryways & dormers are concreted, the wooden rib system is removed with most wood recycled for interior framing & second floor knee wall perimeter framing.  The dome is self supporting with no need for walls to support its shell. The exterior of the dome is steel reinforced concrete with no shingles to blow off in high winds.  Paint the exterior concrete with concrete primer & paint.

Klaus Kolb’s South Carolina Ai concrete dome house earned EPA’s Energy Star.  Home Energy Partners certified his home used 61% less energy than in comparably-size housing.  To lean more, view Kolb Info.  He installed a geothermal cooling & heating system.  Klaus’s 2003 total monthly average energy bill was $49. This includes the electricity and propane costs for his entire 1,600 sq.ft. – 40 ft. dome.

What Does The Prefab Home Dome Kit and Component Panel Consist Of?

The component panels consist of a center core of 7″ of rigid noncombustible expanded polystyrene (EPS)  insulation NOT styrofoam. On the exterior of the EPS is 3/4″ fiber concrete reinforced with galvanized steel mesh. On the interior of the EPS is noncombustible 1/2″ Georgia Pacific DensArmor mold resistant and water resistant gypsum drywall.   DensArmor Plus Interior Panel is a highly mold-resistant, interior gypsum wallboard. By featuring fiberglass mats on both the front and the back, they offer the best in interior moisture protection currently available.  During kit assembly it could rain.  After the drywall is allowed to dry it goes back to its original consistency.  The wallboard is not conventional sheet rock that will crumble and mold when it gets wet. The exterior seam areas between the panels, once filled with on-site fiber concrete are about 3″ deep by 5″ wide with the concrete averaging two inches in thickness. The building plans standard foundation is monolithic slab. However Ai can design the dome to be built on basements, pilings, stem wall, etc.  To lean more, click on Foundations.

The Ai Prefabricated Home Dome Kit (22′-48′) consists of all the component panels for the dome’s exterior shell and one entryway. Your floor plan selection determines how many more entryways or dormers your kit contains.  Entryways and dormers are structural awnings that extend out from the dome.  Under them a 2×4 or 2×6 framed wall is built on site to accept your locally purchased windows and doors. The kit does not include any doors or windows or interior items other than the interior wallboard on each triangle and riser panel. LOW EXTERIOR MAINTENANCE

Ai Concrete Houses protect and lower your maintenance budget because their concrete roofs contain no shingles and no wood to rot, or to burn or to be eaten by termites. Above picture is of a painted 34′ dome being pressure washed.  Prior to pressure washing kill algae with bleach/water or oxygen bleach/water.  Worker has harness tied to eye bolt. The dome is repainted when the paint begins to chalk.  …usually every 4-5-6 years.  The Ai dome has no roof to replace. No wood in or on the dome exterior to rot or to burn or for termites to eat.  No roof to blow off in high winds.

During Kit Assembly stainless steel eye bolts are installed in top dome seams.

For painting attach rope thru eye bolt and tie rope to worker’s harness.

Current technology allows for paint to be dispensed to roller from paint sprayer that sits on the ground.
