To assist in the understanding of the dome geometry, below you will find floor planners and elevation views for each size dome showing possible locations for installation of your locally purchased doors and windows. During the plans design, Ai emails elevation views of the entryways and dormers showing max width and height with recommended door and window rough opening sizes.  You decide the size, number and location of windows and doors that will be installed in your dome’s exterior walls.

Your doors and windows are installed under structural awnings called entryways and dormers that extend out from the dome. On the first floor of American Ingenuity’s three frequency dome home kits 30′ thru 48′, five entryways can be designed to contain doors and windows.  Each entryway can contain 2-3 French Doors or large windows or a combination of doors and windows providing ample light and ventilation into your dome house. The second floor of the 27′, 34′, 36′, 40′, 45′ & 48′ domes has five possible locations for a window dormer or door dormer where a single window or single door can be installed.  Solar tubes or other companies skylights can be installed int he prefab panels.

American Ingenuity designs the geodesic dome home plans or commercial plans and manufactures ten concrete house kits – sizes from 172 sq.ft. to over 2,992 sq.ft.  15′ – 48′ Kits consist of prefab concrete component panels which when assembled make the dome’s exterior walls and roof. The home owner or their Builder assembles the kit & finishes the interior per the Building Plans. The Prefab Panels includes exterior 3/4″ fiber concrete reinforced with galvanized steel mesh, core of  seven (7) inch rigid, nontoxic expanded polystyrene (EPS) R-28 insulation (not styrofoam) & interior of half inch special Georgia Pacific DensArmor Plus gypsum drywall. Once the kit is assembled, seam areas between panels contain overlapped, locked galvanized steel mesh filled with on site fiber concrete averaging 2″ thick. The concrete/steel/eps/drywall contain no food source for mold growth and are noncombustible.

It is Ai’s philosophy that each Buyer pays for only what they need. Building Plans are needed 3 months to 1 1/2 years prior to the kit shipment. About 50% of our client’s building departments require engineer sealed plans, calculations & an Energy Report to issue a permit. As a result these items are separate costs from the building kit.

To view the Three Frequency Dome Geometry, American Ingenuity has designed a Mini-Dome which can be printed out.  It shows the pentagon and hexagon geometry and possible locations for entryways and dormers.  To assemble the Mini-Dome print out these two pdfs and follow the directions.  Ai’s three frequency domes are 30’, 34’, 36’, 40’, 45’ & 48’.  (The 15′, 18′, 22′ & 27′ domes are two frequency geometry).  The 60′ dome is four frequency geometry.

How Ai Dome Stock Plans Are Named

American Ingenuity’s Dome Plans are named as follows:   Ai uses Greek words (Omega, Alpha, Delta) and numbers (21, 22, etc) along with the dome diameter to name our plans. For example 27 Alpha 11: the first two digits are the dome diameter in feet, a Greek word and then a number.

When floor plan layouts will not fit on one page, then you will find that plan name twice or three times depending on the number of pages needed for that layout  with FP1 and FP2  and possibly FP3 at the end.   Even though a plan says basement option, you do not need to purchase the basement plans unless your dome will be built on a basement.  For Foundation Summary click on Summary.

Ai can convert its building plans to the metric system for a small fee.

To increase light in the dome, max out second floor window and door dormers instead of installing skylight panels. For more info scroll down the page for an explanation why Ai  no longer manufactures skylight panels.  To view chart listing square feet & specs by dome size, click on Specs.  On the second page of this article is a summary of square footage by dome size & other info.

About Riser Height (before the triangle panels are installed, rectangle panels called risers are installed). The standard riser height in the dome kit is four feet.  The following describes when the riser can be five feet tall or when an additional two foot custom riser can be installed above the standard four foot riser to increase first floor ceiling heights in rooms where a second floor is installed.

  1. Due to the small size of the 15′ & 18′ tiny homes, the kit pricing includes standard four foot tall risers and additional two foot risers to cause more first floor height for kitchen and shower placement along exterior walls.
  2. The 22′ & 27′ domes can have a custom five foot tall riser panel instead of the four foot standard riser panel & taller entryway base panels.  This results in first floor ceiling height in rooms that have loft or second floor over them of eight feet six inches.
  3. 30, 34′, 36′, 40′, 45′ & 48′ domes can have a taller entryway base panels & custom two foot tall riser panel installed above the standard four foot riser panel. This results in first floor ceiling height in rooms that have second floor over them of nine feet six inches to ten feet tall.
  4. Five foot risers for the larger 30 thru 48′ dome sizes do not fit on the semi-truck, as a result a two foot custom riser can be ordered to increase first floor ceiling height when a second floor is built over the first floor.

In first floor areas where there is no second floor built, there are high vaulted ceilings. Dashed lines on the stock plans show which first floor areas are open to the top of the dome producing high vaulted ceilings.

What does max square feet mean on each of the stock plans?  The second floor square footage is calculated to five feet of perimeter height.

What does max square feet mean on the planners and the elevation views? The max. square feet shown on the planners and elevation views means the entire second floor is built with no high vaulted ceiling over any of the first floor area except for an open area over the stairs. The stairs have a two step platform. The second floor of the 27′, 34′, 36′, 40′, 45′ & 48′ domes show five second floor dormers with each dormer adding around 9-10 sq.ft. to the second floor square footage. The second floor square footage is calculated to five feet of perimeter height.
